Re:
The right to gripe
by Katrin
Hi there -- thanks for this post. I wholeheartedly agree - technobabes (and guys) and vendors and consutants and npostaff all should have fora for free exchange. Two things: Nonprofits are far from perfect and some of the discussion, as was pointed our at groups.nten.org seems to imple that we NPOs are somehow holier than though and vendors are somehow praying on them. Hardly the case - I can imagine that many very upstanding vendors and consultants get extremely discouraged by the unprofessional manner in which some nonprofits are run. So, since there is not yet a truly engaged consultant list, please create one -- in the spirit of what this is all about:building the capactity towards excellence of technology use in noprofits - exemplary and innovative. That is what we here at NTEN want to see. And in that spirit, as I have said repeatedly, the entire point of these lists and conversations is to build the capacity of nonprofit staff, of consultants AND of vendors to choose, evaluate, buy, and provide and sell THE VERY BEST products and services. We have a world to make better and we have no time to waste -- so we better make sure that we learn to be better, more strategic, and more innovative in the use of technology in the pursuit of our missions FAST. And to that end, we are committed to the point of dogged passion to elevate relevant discussions and concerns from ALL affinity groups towards the end of learning and improvement of process and practices in the nonprofit tech space. That might meen convenings, conference calls, white papers, trainings on relevant issues that pertain. The Open API discussion is an example of that -- we can sit here all day and gripe on some list of closed vendors, but it is entirely different take to then have an open conversation about that WITH ALL of the stakeholders - vendors who provide products, consultants who provide services on how to choose and implement tools and strategies, and nonprofits working towards their missions, often with considerable constraints. In other words, we would miss a HUGE opportunity if we leave the conversations siloed yet again and not move common issues and concerns up in a teachable and learnable moment. Best, Katrin NTEN: Your Nonprofit Technology Community
