Now that I'm not at Third Sector New England all day every day, I've been working at home a lot.  I love my clients and I love their projects, but I sorely miss going to an office every day.  What I like best is to be part of a team, working with a wide range of nonprofits but seeing the same faces and working toward a shared mission over the long run.  I also like having a very clear division between home and office.

A number of friends and colleagues have teased me, "Tough life!  You can sit on your sofa in your pajamas, and work from your laptop!"  And of course, it's not a tough life, especially when I compare it to the kind of humanitarian crises that some of our nonprofit colleagues are working hard to prevent or alleviate.

But what I want is for someone to offer me a free desk in a nonprofit or philanthropic organization.*

I don't know whether this has ever been tried, but it occurs to me that - in exchange for a desk and modest use of the amenities - I could make myself useful.  After all, clients pay me well for strategic IT planning services and for my knowledge of resources in the nonprofit sector.  Perhaps I can persuade a nonprofit or philanthropic organization that it's worth it to have me around, so that they can pick my brains for free?

* Preferably in downtown Boston, or within walking distance of an MBTA Red Line station.
