In Technobabe solidarity

Kathy Sierra, author of the brilliant blog, Creating Passionate Users, has cancelled her public appearances in response to mysogynistic death threats via the internet.

My heart goes out to her.  I want to take this opportunity to urge everyone to do his or her part to ensure that the internet is a safe place that promotes civil society.

We need to mobilize a league of tech-friendly executive directors

A buddy and I recently discussed the huge difference it makes for an IT manager at a nonprofit  to have an executive director who is curious and even enthusiastic about what technology can do for the organization, even if he or she is not an expert in the field...

My current hypothesis is that one terrestrial day is roughly equivalent to one blog year...   more »

Let's add OpenID to the nonprofit technology mash-up

Now that Twitter is my latest obsession, and I'm experimenting with ideas for how it can be used by the nonprofit technology community, it's becoming clear that we need  something like OpenID in the mix. Having already spent plenty of time identifying my friends and colleagues on a widget such as MyBlogLog, I don't want to repeat the whole exercise with Twitter...    more »

Too much information and too much transparency? Or a smart tool for disaster response?

My interest in text-messaging is feeble at best. However, when my buddy Andy Carvin starts to speculate about the potential to use Twitter to save lives during emergencies, that commands my attention and respect.  I continue to worry that folks in the field of nonprofit technology aren't doing enough advance preparation for disaster recovery...

WayneGeist

As I've previously mentioned, Wayne Glynn, an esteemed colleague and friend, has been diagnosed with multiple myeloma. This week, Wayne, who is Third Sector New England's director of information systems, is preparing to take a medical leave in order to undergo stem cell therapy.  In a manner that is totally typical of his pro-active, life-affirming personality, he is not only fighting (and winning) his battle against this disease, but also working to help raise money so that other people can benefit from the latest research and treatment. Meanwhile, it's a difficult moment for TSNE's information systems team...   more »
