Even More About Micropayments

As I've previously mentioned, I'm struggling to understand the ramifications of a networked economy and the intricacies of micropayments. This afternoon, I felt inspired by the first-rate Deweyan education that I received at Bennington College and by the talk by Roger Schank that I heard last week.  The possibility of a small-scale hands-on learning experience occurred to me...

A simple (and free!) solution: Site Meter

Site Meter is a free web-based tool that I recommend to nonprofit organizations that want to track the number of visitors their web sites are attracting. I wouldn't encourage anyone to live or die by these numbers, but for nonprofits that are interested in outcomes measurement, a tool such as Site Meter can provide some insight about what sort of impact their web sites are having...   more »

...Moreover, I Am Not An Economist

Attending the Berkman Center's internet law program on a press scholarship has given me ample opportunity to protest (with sweeping arm gestures) that I am not a lawyer and not a journalist.  Now it's incumbent upon me to point out that I'm not an economist.

I was tremendously impressed with Yochai Benkler's presentation on "The Rise of the Networked Economy," but I can't help wondering how we are all going to make a living in the future that he is envisioning, and what the implications are going to be for the philanthropic and nonprofit sector...

A Happily Incomplete Education at the Berkman Center's Internet Law Program

I'm still working hard to process all of the ideas presented at the iLaw program sponsored by the Berkman Center.  A really good learning experience extends far beyond the days spent in the classroom, and I'm sure that for at least the next 20 years I'll be deriving new insights from what I learned this week.  It was, in the best sense, an incomplete education...   more »

The NPtech Tagging Project: Taking It to the Next Level

I'm a fan of the nptech tagging project, and am always on the alert for more effective ways to share information within the field of technology for the nonprofit sector.  Therefore, I'm fascinated to watch the evolution of a new project that was inspired by a conversation between Marnie Webb and Peter Campbell.  It's tentatively titled NPTech Community, and I'd like to encourage everyone to check it out....   more »

In Praise of BlogExplosion

Do we have a world of bloggers, and a dearth of blog readers? If so, I like the way that BlogExplosion addresses that challenge.

What I would love to see is a great deal more participation in
BlogExplosion on the part of nonprofit bloggers.  Let's get more views from mission-based organizations into the mix...   more »

Ambivalent sidesteps in the direction of Skype

The zeitgeist sometimes impels me to experiment with a technology tool that doesn't particularly appeal to me, and apparently it's Skype's turn.

In theory,
it's a great idea:  you can download some free software that will enable you to use a computer with internet access to make free telephone calls almost anywhere in the world...
