You can turn your nonprofit/philanthropic organization's logo into an web browser icon!

If you look at your web browser's address bar, you'll see that it's not only showing you the address of the site you are currently browsing (in this case,
http://blog.deborah.elizabeth.finn.com/blog) but a small icon to the left of the address.  The icon also shows up if you bookmark a web site as a favorite that you plan to visit again.  The usual web design term for this is "favicon."

The favicon is usually something generic that is inserted by your web browser (e.g, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Netscape Navigator), but wouldn't it be even better if that icon were your nonprofit organization's logo?

Thanks to the folks who maintain the HTML Kit web site, this is free of charge and relatively easy to do.  The FavIcon from Pics tool not only does the job instantly but provides very clear instructions for the novice.

A few caveats:
  • The conversion of a digital graphic to a favicon works best if your graphic is already in a square-shaped format.  Otherwise, the conversion process will probably distort it a little bit.

  • You will need to know how to upload the resulting icon to your web site's file manager.  For some web sites, this will involve using FTP (File Transfer Protocol).

  • You will need to know how to modify the HTML of the  <head> tag on your home page.
