Why one web site for 100 shelters is better than 100 web sites for 100 shelters
When I talk to folks who staff shelters for the homeless, they tell me that they spend a lot of time of the phone trying to reach other shelters.  Surely this is a situation that cries out for a web-based solution.   more »

Think globally, meet locally

I'm delighted to see that
Andy Carvin of the Digital Divide Network has announced the formation of local DDN Meetups.  In other words, you can now click on a central web address provided by Meetup.Com and sign up to start or join a group in your neighborhood of other individuals who are interested in addressing the digital divide.

LinuxWorld and the Nonprofit World (Redux)

I recently wrote here about my experiences at LinuxWorld, and also posted about it to some email distribution lists, under the subject heading, "Same planet, different worlds."

Many thanks are due to all the folks responded with thoughtful and very useful commentary about the challenge of building bridges between these two worlds.  I am posting a selection of their comments here, having obtained permission to do so from each of the authors quoted here. Additional comments are very welcome!

View Article  John McNutt's Electronic Advocacy Web Site

Is electronic advocacy as effective as traditional advocacy? And shouldn't we be asking whether any form of advocacy has ever been effective?

John McNutt is a serious researcher who is addressing these questions.

Gifts Unkind
It's a powerful archetypal image - the baby left under cover of darkness on the doorstep of an orphanage.

Nowadays, we sometimes see a much less heartbreaking but thoroughly up to date version of this story:  obsolete computers are left under cover of darkness on the doorstep of a nonprofit agency.

The Nonprofit Tech Jobs email distribution list
One of the things that I like best about running Nonprofit Tech Jobs is the opportunity to help people that I've never met in person.  It's a great pleasure to have strangers come up to me at professional events and say "I found my job (or "our agency found our technology guru") through the Nonprofit Tech Jobs list!"   more »

The Telephone Analogy

Are you a nonprofit/philanthropic professional who is having trouble making the case that your organization needs to bring its technology infrastructure into the 21st century - or at least into the 1990s?

Please allow me to acquaint you with the telephone analogy.

Online Tools for Constituent Engagement
Today I had the great pleasure of giving a workshop in Roxbury, Massachusetts at the behest of Organizers Collaborative, which has created an Organizational Divide Initative with funding from the Boston Foundation.

I'm pleased to make available here for downloading in two parts a version of the handout that I created for today's workshop.  Part 1 features a new chart of recommendations for specific types of email and web-based tools, which should be useful for nonprofits and other mission-based organizations that are going online to do outreach, organizing, activism, or advocacy. Part 2 offers some strategic guidelines for using online tools; readers of this blog will already be familiar with many of the ideas explained in this section.

The handout has been designed for organizers and nonprofit workers who are highly skilled in advocacy and organizing but are not experienced in using information and communication technology.
Your feedback, especially on the new chart in Part 1 of the handout, will be very welcome.   more »

Instant messaging? Live online chat? Thanks - but I'd rather avoid it.
A number of my colleagues and friends swear by instant messaging as the real-time collaboration tool of the the 21st century.  I feel like such a curmudgeon, but I disagree.   more »
